  End of January, Winter. Heater in one of the dorms shagged, but we eventually got it to work on full heat. Gas controller needs replacement I think. We all slept on lower bunks and left windows open at -20°C. The heat in the other dorm appears to work as we lit it for other guests. They are a bit of a challenge to light if you have not had experience. Half of the mantles on the gas lights broken and no spares. Door knob to kitchen broken and we had to remove it so that we would not get trapped in or out of kitchen. Bring matches to light heaters.

  I still prefer Rampart Creek over this hostel, but the views beside the Sunwapta River at sunset are unreal!

  Not sure why it is in such a state of neglect as we showed up after a weekend and spent three nights there and nothing was fixed. I assume others reported the problems? We have to HI Jasper.

  It took some work to get the heat on but the rest of the experience was fantastic. Endless hiking options, relaxing evenings by the river, and some great stargazing at night.

  Nice location for outdoor skiing or ice. Beautiful night sky and the traffic on the road is non-existent at night. Some one drilled a hole in the river ice so we had easy water access. Might be wise to bring an ax. Mattresses on beds are really nice.
